January 2023: E-mail to Dawn Grocock

Footpaths Officer for Herts County Council

Dear Dawn Grocock,
I am writing again about the continuing problem in Tykeswater Lane ( Byway 60) of access by motorised vehicles with damage to the surface of the footpath and danger to pedestrians from the presence of moving traffic which is causing concern to local residents and Elstree and Borehamwood Green Belt Society.
We suggest that the footpath could be rerouted and separated from the traffic access for pedestrian safety, though the noise and pollution from the 4x4s would still disturb the peace of the neighbourhood.
I am reliably informed that the fly tipping along the route is localised and relatively small so why cannot Hertfordshire County Council remove it for the sake of the environment and aesthetics?
The Committee members who recently walked the Byway 60 and made careful and detailed notes of rubbish dumping and hazards will be sending you a report of their findings.
Please do consider these ideas for the improvement of our environment and life quality!
Would it be possible please to ask you to give a presentation to our AGM the date to be arranged in May 2023 on Our Footpaths? It is a subject of great interest for us.
With all best wishes
Ann Goddard Chair E&BGBS

August 2022: E-mail to Dawn Grocock
E-mail sent to Dawn Grocock, HBC on 25/08/22
Dear Dawn Grocock,
Elstree and Borehamwood Green Belt Society are still greatly concerned about the condition of Tykeswater Lane which is still suffering from litter dumping and damage due to the walking surface from wheeled vehicle access.
We fully support the complaints from our member Ken Herbert. Unless all wheeled vehicle access is barred there will always be a risk to pedestrians from rutted and unsafe surfaces. If this is not possible for a Byway it should be reclassified as a footpath.
Please expedite the clearance of unsightly rubbish as soon as possible.
With best wishes
Ann Goddard Chair E&B Green Belt Society
A response was received, that we are not at liberty to publish.
However, we can advise that the order to gate and restrict access to the footpath / byway received objections so could not be passed. Also, although the litter is of concern, as the pathway is damaged HBC cannot access the litter to remove it.
Correspondence is ongoing and others have been contacted for further assistance.
If members have any evidence or experiences of this footpath / byway, please do send them to us at [email protected]
